5 techniques to overcome the feeling of death anxiety

Whatever you fight, you strengthen, and what you resist, persists.

Most people don’t like to think or talk about death. Even though it’s inevitable that every one of us will die, dread, anxiety, and fear still surrounds death  even the word alone. We try to avoid thinking about it. But in doing so, we actually affect our mental and physical health negatively more than we know.

Death anxiety can be perfectly normal. The fear of the unknown and what happens afterward is a legitimate concern. But when it starts interfering with how you live your life, it becomes problematic. And for people who don’t find the right coping methods, it’s possible for all that anxiety to cause mental pain and stress.
Because death is such an unwelcome topic for most people, we immediately try to get it out of our head by doing things to distract ourselves.

Death anxiety is defined as “the state in which an individual experiences apprehension, worry, or fear related to death and dying” . In the Nursing Outcomes Classification guide, death anxiety is defined as “vague uneasy feeling of discomfort or dread generated by perceptions of a real or imagined threat to one’s existence”

You have to remember these things to overcome the feeling of death anxiety:

1- One way to accept death is to realize that you really can’t do anything about it. We’re all born alone and we will all die alone. One of the reasons you worry about death is because you’re scared of the unknown.

2- The human mind thinks about a squillion thoughts every day, and on average about a squillion minus a hundred are negative. It’s true. Try this: think of yourself as being made up of four parts. (    Mind - Physical body - Heart - Spiritual aspect )

This means: You aren't your mind.Your mind is just a tool for you to use.

3- Notice your thought, as in: ah, hello, thought. I know you’re not real; you are just a thought. Oh well, you can stay there if you like, but I have things to do today so I’m just going to go ahead and do them.

4- One of the best techniques when it comes to overcoming death anxiety is to live every day like it’s your last. When you live every day like it’s your last, you practice surrendering to life as it is. You let go of your resistance and live with more integrity, make better choices, maybe even care more about your relationships.

Now, instead of obsessing over things you can’t control such as death, focus on what you can control: your attitude, your outlook on life, your lifestyle choices.

5- Always remember that worry is a total waste of time. It doesn't change anything. All it does is steal your joy and keeps you very busy doing nothing.
